Loss is a part of life, but it is never easy to deal with. Whether it’s the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or losing a job, grief can affect anyone. In Ghana and across Africa, many people suffer in silence because grief is often misunderstood. At THRIVE Wellbeing Institute, we believe that discussing grief helps us heal and support one another more effectively.
Grief is a natural emotional response to loss. It may bring sadness, anger, guilt, or even relief. Everyone experiences grief differently. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to grieve, and no set timeline for healing.
Common Signs of Grief
• Difficulty sleeping or eating
• Trouble concentrating
• Sudden mood changes
• Withdrawal from friends and activities
• Physical aches and fatigue
These feelings are normal. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to seek support.
Healthy Ways to Cope with Grief
1. Talk About It: Share your feelings with trusted friends, family, or a counsellor. You are not alone.
2. Take Care of Yourself: Eat well, rest, and allow yourself time to heal.
3. Accept Your Emotions: There is no need to hide your feelings or rush your recovery.
4. Remember and Celebrate: Honouring the memory of a loved one or reflecting on what was lost can bring comfort and meaning.
5. Join a Support Group: Connecting with others who have experienced similar losses can help you feel understood and supported.
When to Seek Help
If grief feels overwhelming or leads to depression, substance use, or thoughts of self-harm, it is essential to seek professional help. Lay counsellors and mental health professionals at THRIVE Wellbeing Institute are here to support you through every stage of your journey.
Supporting Others Through Loss
Listen without judgment, offer practical help, and check in regularly. Sometimes, just being present is the best support you can give.
